• Physical – Choose this option if there will be a physical sitter in the patient’s room with them.
• Virtual – Choose this option if the patient meets the criteria to be monitored virtually but there is no physical sitter present.
SAFETY TECH SPOTLIGHT
Veronica Garcia has been a patient safety technician at PIH Health for 8 months. She works in the Nursing Administration Department of PIH Health Whittier Hospital in Whittier, CA.
Veronica chose to become a patient safety technician because it is a step closer for her to bedside patient care. She says, “even though I am behind the scenes watching over patients through the camera, it still brings me great joy to help the staff on each unit and have a role in keeping our patients safe from falls or injuries.”
She says her favorite part of the job is not only keeping them safe but getting to know each patient through the lens of the camera. She feels great compassion and care for the patients and does her job as if she were watching over her very own loved one.
According to Veronica, to do this job, you need to have patience, understanding, and a willingness to look closer at a patient’s needs from the monitor. She says, “it can be challenging at times, but at the end of the day it is rewarding because your patient stayed safe because of you.”
Patient safety is important to Veronica because she is a reflection of her organization, and she wants her supervisors and co-workers to know that they can depend on her. Most importantly, she wants patients and their loved ones to feel the compassion they provide to put patients’ safety and needs first and are reassured they are in good hands in our hospital.
Veronica was nominated as safety spotlight of the month for her quick observation and notification to the staff of a patient in distress, preventing any type of adverse event. Well done, Veronica, the staff, and patients at PIH Health are blessed to have you looking out for them.

"The Safety Technician is the first line of defense for patient falls and safety events.”
